CM Punk def. John Cena (New WWE Champion)
Published on July 18th, 2011 by DJ, Filed in Pay-Per Views, Comment? (26)

(This is a longer article from WWE.com)

CM Punk did it. He opened a black hole in the WWE Universe, seizing the WWE Championship in his hometown within his final hours as a contracted Superstar of Vince McMahon, sufficiently embarrassing The WWE Chairman and conquering a presumably fired John Cena, “The Champ.”

As time precariously ticked away toward the expiration of Punk’s contract, a fretful Mr. McMahon’s overzealous acts during the high stakes bout enabled The Second City Savior to supplant Cena as the new WWE Champion. Then, averting the last-ditch desperate measures of WWE’s CEO – including an attempted Montreal-esque Chicago Screwjob and a cash-in coup by Money in the Bank contract winner Alberto Del Rio – Punk escaped through the crowd with the WWE Title and its 48-year lineage, as he blew Mr. McMahon and WWE a kiss goodbye.

McMahon, who’s waged war with the likes of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Bret “Hit Man” Hart and more, witnessed the end of a dynasty he himself established. After, when asked for his comments on Sunday night’s events, The WWE Chairman refused comment.

Never has distaste for The Cenation Commander-in-Chief been so resounding as it was Sunday night, the echo of jeers sharply contrasting the wild reception for Punk in the same arena that welcomed Cena in his 2002 debut match. The underdog in a building swathed with signs reading, “If Punk loses, we riot,” the defending titleholder couldn’t channel the energy he typically garners from the WWE Universe. And every maneuver administered simply couldn’t keep Punk down.

Anxiety mounted as the WWE Title bout raged on in front of 15,000 extremely vocal WWE fans. Then, as Cena cinched in the STF, The Chairman of the Board made his way to the ring with WWE Executive Vice President John Laurinaitis for a potential screwing not seen since Survivor Series 1997. Ever the dignified combatant, Cena released the hold and foiled the ruse by knocking out Laurinaitis. An opportunist in his own right, CM Punk sprang upon the moment, dropping Cena with a GTS for a pin that caused seemingly all of Chicago to erupt.

Next, the road leaving Chi-Town and departing WWE was nearly impeded by Alberto Del Rio, bearing both his oft touted destiny and, of greater consequence, the Money in the Bank briefcase. Winning a future WWE Title bout just an hour sooner, the moneyed Mexican jetted to the ring at Mr. McMahon’s call to cash in on the fatigued new champion, disgusting the Second City crowd who feared the imminent downfall of The Straight Edge Superstar. Though Punk would unquestionably go down a veritable martyr, it’d be in defeat and failure in his purpose, nonetheless.

The lip-ringed riot-inciter was well prepared, however. Punk deflected the strike and like a thief in the night, the new WWE Champion fled through his devotees.

For CM Punk, there was alignment of several symbolic moons above the Allstate Arena on Sunday night: The dwindling hours of Punk’s WWE contract in The Second City Saint’s hometown against the antithetic square-jawed Superman of WWE (red tee in place of cape). The tattooed upstart could land the crushing blow to the organization he’d grown to abhor supported by the Chicagoans in the arena where he’d made his very first WWE appearance. Though not wearing gangster-inspired garb like he had while heralding Cena’s entrance at WrestleMania 22, Punk planned on exacting a plain-sight heist, the biggest in WWE history.

If victorious, The Straight Edge Superstar vowed to abandon the WWE Universe and sequester the richest prize in sports-entertainment in his exodus. The scarlet sweatbanded Cenation leader became a bull’s-eye for Punk, whose furious, acrimonious tirade weeks ago  commanded the immediate attention of the world, including the WWE CEO. The vile-tongued competitor was suspended but reinstated after Cena’s passionate beseeching of Mr. McMahon, securing a match fueled by the controversy of Punk’s unfiltered words and the implications of his victory – the besieging of WWE’s most cherished title, defended for half a century.

The conflict polarized the WWE Universe around the world, but not in Chicago, where the attending masses all but carried pitchforks to see the ascendancy of CM Punk and consequent fall of John Cena. Ultimately, apropos of Chicago’s Windy City moniker, the winds of fate blew in the direction of CM Punk on Sunday night.

McMahon tried to negotiate all the way up to the 11th hour but certainly wouldn’t risk the livelihood of his publically traded corporate and entertainment juggernaut by placing it solely in the hands of Cena. His involvement was not as reprisal against the tattooed teetotaler or even to avenge The WWE Chairman’s – to quote Punk – “idiotic daughter” or “doofus son-in-law,” but purely to rescue his company and any future champion from the depths of possible irrelevance. And, though ready to affix all blame on Cena (who would be fired if Punk left the pay-per-view with the prize), in a word, McMahon failed.

No ice cream bars, no souvenir cups, no more “clobberin’ time.” As he promised, CM Punk is gone and so is the WWE Title. Proudly adorned in the colors of his native city and a lustrous golden championship, the straight edge warrior slinks out of the spotlight and moves forth to a future that remains unclear other than re-acquaintance with Cobra Commander and comic books.

But what of John Cena? Having endured one of his darkest hours, The Cenation Commander-in-Chief must regain his footing to march along on a journey that may not include the WWE Championship, a WrestleMania XXVIII showdown with The Rock, or WWE at all, assuming The Chairman keeps his word. Whatever lies ahead, it will all happen on a permanently altered WWE landscape with no CM Punk, no WWE Championship, and perhaps no John Cena – a vision that none might have believed they’d ever, ever see.

I thought wrestling was pretty much dead, to be honest I hadn’t watched it much at all since Austin left – but you made it feel REAL again, you brought that uncertainty to it – and you gave me and my friends a hell of a show last night. It was worth every penny – watching you walk away with the title was PRICELESS. I hope to meet you again bro, you were cool as hell last time my only regret was that I didn’t ask to get a pic w/u but it’s all good – I’m sure I’ll run into you in the Chi sometime.

That was possibly the most epic event for WWE in the last 10 years. Completely overshadowed Wrestlemania. Just goes to show what could’ve been had they given Punk the ball and actually let him run with it. Enjoy some well deserved time off. You sir, are a hero.

March 17th was my son’s 3rd birthday. I knew going into MITB this was a birthday my son would remember. But as he had a hard time getting to sleep on a simple kid’s parties and presents, I had a hard time sleeping knowing why I never gave up on being a wrestling fan. CM Punk wasn’t over in previous reigns not because of his ability or lack of fan support, but lack of a mic and a proper push deserving of the best professional wrestler on the planet.

CM Punk does get it, and I can only hope that VKM truly gets it. But with the internet now working the fans, who knows what to expect next, but I can hardly wait.

Sorry July 17th. A photo of some jugs just distracted me :)

Story line or not, what CM Punk said about the WWE product and Vince is right on the money, and well over due to be said.

Looked like the new boots may have caused some slippage, but for the first time in years I finally felt I got my money’s worth out of a pay per view! Punk, you do what you feel is right, and I’d love to see you over with the “other guys”! They need the best mic man in the biz, which is you sir! Keep your voice real, and your in ring performance fresh. I’ll follow you in whatever company gives you your “pipe bomb”.

what cm punk did was pure genius. vince can be mad now but in reality punk showed him that he cant run around like a chickenhawk. punk sparked a new fire a fresh interest into wrestling again, he showed that no matter what the price is wrestling matters. i hope punk takes the belt over to tna and hogan and bishoff create another dynasty by sticking it to vince. overnight punk you became a legend and that my friend is money in the bank. punk is a franchise that needs to be marketed and promoted, just do it quick b4 the wwe gets a chance to recouperate from the blow. i got so much to say but whos listening, maybe in the ring sometime. congrats punk we respect u period.

Loved every minute of the Punk Cena feud. Great angle about stickin it to the man. Best promos I’ve ever seen, ‘You will apologise and you will like it’ (borrowed that and used it on my boss), calling Cena the New York Yankees – genius! Loved the style of the match too, so much more refreshing and interesting than the regular fare. Only downside was the Cena biased commentary, cool the fans were all behind him though. Awesome! Bet Punk had more fun with than he’s had in a while at WWE. Cool post-event pics (but get some food in that fridge dammit!)

C M truly stands for Championship Material. Good luck to Punk in whereever he goes next – Thanx and keep it real bro!

CM PUNK is just that a punk his wrestling moves are rubbish as is his straight edge antics that apart the fight with Cena was brilliant a real classic. I don’t know of CM PUNK has left the wwe for good or not and to be honest I don’t care because wrestling was great before Punk and will continue to be great without his. As its says no man is bigger than the sport. Good luck CM PUNK in what ever you do ( but I expect you’ll be back in the wwe )

What an epic match. actually the first match with Cena i enjoyd in year’s. And the kiss good bye to Vince it were price less :) Thanks punk hope to see you in pro wrestling again some day

Posted by shiffy

Lets jus say this year has been well with wwe bringing back stars such as scsa and the rock is great for the business for 1 the wwe relys to much on john cena frankly I’m not a fan of him but I respect what he’s done for the business and I’ve come to the conclusion I respect him more for the match he had with punk punk was overrated and they nevrr gave him a releal push he could go newhere else and be the man he is a promotional genious Vince is an idiot they need to start promoting the younger guys like d-bryan Alex Riley hell even the miz the wwe will always be #1 but there down for a count without punk and cena still #1

I have to agree with AJ. Thank you for contributing to and making a wrestling match that felt real again. It was a genuinely exciting bout, one which I initially feared you’d be robbed of! However, instead of the predictable route of an oh-so-nearly, the match was a fitting end to this stage in your career. You’re a legend, dude. It’s great to see a wrestler with real ability and his own take on things make a true impact on what is so often simply a dull soap opera merry-go-round these days. Cheers from the U.K., Punk!

I have to agree with the previous comments. I was getting really tired of WWE wrestling. I barely watch Smackdown anymore, and Punk is the only reason I kept watching Raw. I’m a huge fan of the guy since the beginning. Nomatter what he does, there’s something unique with him. I still remember him winning his first Money in the Bank and his feud with Batista after he became World Champ… That was brilliant.

But this time, it surpasses everything I had seen so far. Punk has became one of the very few wrestling stars who are neither a heel or face – they’re beyond that, because whenever they have a mic in their hand, they strike people straight in the heart. Cena and the other faces are too clean on themselves. Punk isn’t. I’m not. The people are not. And that’s why I consider Punk is the real people’s champ right now.

Thank you Punk for this great match last night. And thank you to Chicago’s audience. That was the most emotional match I had ever seen. Thank you for making me feel again that was real. Thank you for standing up. Thank you for winning – and I’m not talking about the match.

Yesterday, I too was from Chicago.

Please tell me TNA is where your looking to go… that would be horrible… your to good of a wrestler to end up there…. Mr. Anderson aka Mr. kennedy is the champion there which is a disgrace and is very far from a future hall of famer unlike yourself… im just saying.. like u say SPEAK your MIND !!

Posted by POPE49

Sting is the World Champ in TNA now and if Punk decides to go to TNA with the WWE Championship in tow, then Vince and the rest of the front office will be really embarassed…………Nonetheless, congratulations to CM Punk, I hope to one day meet him in person and he truly is the best in the world and especially better than John Cena……I always believed that, no lie.

Posted by TAZZ

How can people say that CM PUNK is the best in the world? He is average at best, yes he was good on the mike but his in ring ability was so average his matchesed to put me to sleep. I won’t miss him in the WWE and if he does join TNA then he will be a punk with no future

Posted by Ralph

I was ecstatic to learn that all the results of the PPV were the ones I was hoping for. Punk winning the title made it great because he deserved that chance to get it & he was the workhorse for the longest amount of time due to the fact that he hardly ever got injured & he ran with everything he was given & I hope to see him again in the WWE but if he really won’t be there again then I’ll see him wherever he goes because he always brigns his A game to anything he is a part of. I’ve been a fan of his since I started watching WWE again in ’07 & I won’t stop being a huge fan.

Posted by steverino

TAZZ, enough already… we get your opinion. I might give your comment more credence if you hadn’t named yourself after a midget wrestler…. what is TAZZ anyway, 4 ft 6 or something….

Posted by Punknut*

…Pound for pound the very best in his sport, in the ring and on the mic… no-one comes close. Awesome man, absolutely awesome! ;)

Good luck with your future endevours.

Posted by Dave

steverino: Tazz is one of the 2 TNA commentators. :)

Posted by steverino

I know that Dave, and before that he was this almighty feared wrestler in ECW, except that when he got to the WWE, we found out he was no bigger than Hornswoggel….. …. I stand by what I said…. please stop trying to sabatoge a thread with a handle named after a midget…..sorry, I said it!

Posted by TAZZ

Steverino nice try but I’m not named after Taz the wrestler ok. It was given to me when I was in the army fighting for my country. So are you having a pop at me because I don’t like cm punk or for the fact that I can see through the smoke screen wwe and punk are using. We all know the punk is still in the wwe and this is just a storyline.

Posted by Blaze

Tazz, ur dull… If you want to suck upto cena its fine by me or the others… But stop talking rubbish… CM Punk is a talented wrestler… He even made John Cena look good… Now that is the best thing that could have happened to him… :P

CM Punk always put up good matches in his days of Straight edge society lead or the Nexus lead. The guy has the charisma whether u like it or not unlike. So feel free to walk out… No one actually invited you to come and comment on this page for a start.. n for ur info this is CM Punk’s page.. :P
