Happy Birthday, CM Punk! MTV wishes.
Published on October 26th, 2011 by Fabiola, Filed in General News, Comment? (2)

The members of the MTV Newsroom are enthusiastic about a number of different entertainment avenues. Music, obviously, tops that list. Movies are right up there, of course. Sports are important, as are art galleries and theatrical performances. And then there are also a handful of us who quite enjoy professional wrestling. That’s why we couldn’t let the day go by without wishing CM Punk, one of the best performers currently working on the WWE circuit, an extremely happy birthday. The man born Phillip Brooks turns 32 years old today.

Punk is notable for a number of reasons. He doesn’t have a traditional professional wrestling look (he is obviously in good shape but would never be mistaken for a professional bodybuilder the way stars like John Cena or Triple H might) and has a totally unique character (he is straight edge, a lifestyle he actually subscribes to in real life). Despite all the piercings, tattoos and crazy hair choices, Punk has managed to ascend to the top of the heap both within the WWE (he has been a world champion four times) and among wrestling fans (he won 2009 Best Feud of the Year in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter). He has had some of the most incredible matches of the modern era, including an incredible series of matches with Samoa Joe in Ring of Honor, a pair of victories in Money in the Bank encounters and a nutty TLC match with Jeff Hardy.

Punk has often talked about his love for music (MTV News’ own Kyle Anderson actually interviewed him for a story about music in Spin magazine a few years ago), and his taste runs pretty (his entrance music is by Killswitch Engage). He also said that the first band he ever got totally obsessed over was Rancid, which is why we celebrate his birthday with a little “Ruby Soho.”

Arrogant, manipulative, conceited … unlucky? During his match against U.S. Champion Daniel Bryan at WWE Bragging Rights last night, Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler lost when the referee appeared to blow a call. Tonight, with Ziggler’s lady friend, SmackDown Official Consultant Vickie Guerrero, and a watchful CM Punk observing from ringside, Ziggler again went down in flames after yet another seeming mistake by a referee.

After an emotion-charged 7-on-7 Tag Team Elimination Match, Team SmackDown defeated Team Raw to take home the WWE Bragging Rights trophy for the second year in a row.

As the list of remaining competitors dwindled down, the final four Superstars were Edge and Rey Mysterio vs. Ezekiel Jackson and Team Raw captain The Miz.

Despite Team Raw’s confidence and drive, it was a Spear from The Rated-R Superstar to The Miz which earned Team SmackDown the win.

At last year’s WWE Bragging Rights, the winning brand was determined by tallying the number of victories from each brand during the entire night. This year however, everything rode on which brand won the tag team match.

In a match that Edge called for against CM Punk, mayhem ensued when members of Team Raw interfered. Although the match was ruled an immediate disqualification win for Edge, it was far from over. Chaos reigned as Superstars from both brands tangled with one another. In the end, the blue brand stood tall after The Ultimate Opportunist Speared Punk. Which brand will reign supreme at WWE Bragging Rights?

Bragging Rights Preview: Team Raw vs. Team SmackDown
Published on October 19th, 2011 by Fabiola, Filed in Preview, Comment? (6)

At WWE Bragging Rights, a firm line will be drawn directly down the middle of the WWE Universe as the rosters of Monday Night Raw and Friday Night SmackDown take up arms to determine the supreme brand in sports-entertainment.

In the explosive sequel to 2009’s breakout pay-per-view, The Miz leads Raw’s squad into battle with Team SmackDown, captained by Big Show – no 7-foot stranger to these circumstances. Just one year ago, The World’s Largest Athlete orchestrated a betrayal of suitably immense proportions as a duplicitous Big Show turned on his Raw branded teammates to give the blue hued brand the inaugural WWE Bragging Rights victory.

Now, the Knucklehead star has a far more official role at the forefront of the Syfy franchise Superstars.
But even larger than SmackDown’s captain is the objective of Team Raw, as they collectively prepare to avenge their emphatic defeat from the previous year. Each member prevailing in a series of qualifying matches, Mr. Money in the Bank finds himself flanked by formidable allies including Sheamus, John Morrison, R-Truth, Santino Marella, newly christened Raw Superstar CM Punk and a returning Ezekiel Jackson.

Behind Big Show is a skilled and diverse Team SmackDown, including Rey Mysterio, Jack Swagger, Alberto Del Rio, Edge, Tyler Reks, and Kofi Kingston, who all won their respective qualifying matches on the Oct. 15 edition of SmackDown. For just the second time in history, a massive tag team brawl of 14 warriors will entitle only one brand to undisputed bragging rights. The encounter will be contested in an elimination style format, and will continue until all members of one team are taken out of the match.

On the Oct. 18 edition of Raw, just six days before WWE Bragging Rights, the blue brand scored a decisive victory over their red rivals in a SmackDown vs. Raw Battle Royal. While some might view that win on Raw’s home turf as a sign of things to come, it’s equally likely that the loss only strengthened Monday Night Raw’s resolve. Will The World’s Largest Athlete once again be the pivotal piece to Team SmackDown’s success? Or will The Miz add yet another feat to his heavily decorated year, including winning the United States Championship and Money in the Bank briefcase?

Stay tuned to Raw on USA Network and SmackDown on Syfy as the WWE Universe counts down to WWE Bragging Rights this Sunday – available only on pay-per-view.

With SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long leading the charge, the blue brand’s team for WWE Bragging Rights invaded Raw. Long appeared to relish introducing Team SmackDown, including captain Big Show, Edge, Alberto Del Rio, Kofi Kingston, Jack Swagger, Tyler Reks & Rey Mysterio.

The seven interlopers paraded around the ring until Team Raw’s captain, The Miz, confronted them and presented members of the red squad, including CM Punk, John Morrison, Santino Marella, Sheamus and newest member, Ezekiel Jackson.

The two teams scuffled after Team SmackDown refused to exit the ring. Once the air had cleared, Show challenged his counterpart, Miz, to a match later in the evening. Bolstered by his teammates, Mr. Money in the Bank accepted.
