When you think of a wrestling champ, you might conjure an image of Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin or Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Or rather, you might imagine an extremely muscular, American-hero type who seems to be the good guy whenever he steps in the ring.
CM Punk is not your typical WWE wrestling champ.
The Chicago-born modern wrestling star has tattoos wrapping his arms. Across his stomach is another tattoo, declaring the wrestler “straight-edge.”
Yet, he has wanted to a professional wrestler since he was young when he was looking up to former stars such as Rowdy Roddy Piper and Shawn Michaels.
“I always saw myself as a wrestling superstar,” Punk said. “If I got fired today, I would still be a wrestler tomorrow. I’d probably be wrestling extensively in Japan. I’m not somebody who failed at football and just tried
He seemingly has come out of nowhere to take the WWE world by storm, and everyone except for him is mad about it. Every time you tune in to a match, it’s like WWE ringleader and CEO Vince McMahon, Triple H and John Cena constantly are baiting Punk with trash talk.
“I just don’t think I am what they think is what a wrestler should act like, look like or be,” Punk said. “I have a chip on my shoulder. I speak my mind. They’re not in love with that. They want somebody who falls in line and talks about how great the WWE is.”
Punk will face off against champion John Cena and Alberto Del Rio in a Triple Threat Match at the Cajundome on Monday night. The event starts at 7:15. Tickets are $15.
Punk is excited to face Cena and said he always had to change up his moves when wrestling Cena.
“I respect the hell out of the guy because he keeps me sharp,” Punk said. “Everybody should want to face him. I never got my rematch. This is a chance for me to get the title back.”
With his grit and attitude, Punk said nothing has come easy for him in the business or in the ring.
“I’ve had to fight for everything,” he said. “There have been instances where I think, ‘Boom, I made it.’ But I still had to fight for everything. That’s why I have that chip on my shoulder. I’m always going to fight for stuff. It gets tough to watch people afforded opportunities when guys like myself are busting their ass.”
It’s not the first time Punk has said something outlandish. During the entire interview, he’s talking himself up for the title match. Now, he has done all the physical training he needs; he’s focusing on the mental games.
“I’ve beat him in the past. He’s beaten me,” Punk said. “It’s almost all mind games.”
The WWE event also will include appearances from new COO Triple H, “The Apex Predator” Randy Orton, Christian, Kofi Kingston, “Celtic Warrior” Sheamus, John Morrison, the “World’s Strongest Man” Mark Henry, The Bella Twins and more.
